Visual Precast Concrete artwork of a mill wheel segment called a harp

About project

Period: 2025

Client: Bellway Homes

Project: Public artwork

The site had remains of a previous wind powered grain mill, so as a part of the hard landscaping and artist was commissioned to reflect this.

The design is based on segments the mill wheel into 8 and having bedded in the landscape.

Result

8 elegant harp shaped pieces of artwork that add to the built environment, acknowledging the local history.

The surface of the visual precast concrete was seal before grit blasting so to protect the fair face from stains and graffiti. While the exposed area was left so as to darken to a vibrant red when wet.

Each piece is 700mm long by 500mm high, weighing it at 250kg.

Purpose

To produce the artist’s designs in precast concrete that would capture the clear lines, be durable and change with the weather and time.

Process

Casting blanks with a foundation foot allowed for a monolithic structure to be created reducing the risk of freeze thaw issues in joint lines if fixed after.

A red granite mix design with white cement was used to create contrast between the fair face and exposed areas.

The mix also contained 20% cement replacement to reduce environmental impact.

Each piece was carefully wrapped in a vinyl template and then grit blasted to expose the pattern
