multi layered visual precast concrete way marker on wilderness path

About project

Period: 2025

Client: Waltham Forest Council

Project: Public artwork

The reclaimed land was adjacent to Jubilee Park and had remains of building debris from WW2 that the landscape architects want to conceptually include in the design.

Result

A set of 12 way-markers installed at locations on the Christopher Robbins woodland trail, each number and linked to similar styled entrance stones.

Each way-marker was accompanied by a foot stone, a 300mm square precast visual reference to the nature and history of the area. This was achieved with Graphic Concrete to etch the graphic into the surface.

Each piece is 950mm tall by 400mm square at the base weighing in at 260kg.

Purpose

To develop a style using a range of concrete mixes including several with recycled content that would be durable to the elements and potential defacing.

Process

A series of mix designs of varying colours and slump were developed and trialled in layers to visually and structural asses the result. This also provided data for the visual concrete report of how the fine way-markers  should look like and preform.
